Wood Carving Gouges

Most of my carving gouges are made by Pfeil.  They are excellent but expensive.

Someone suggested that I buy second hand gouges via e-bay.

I now have about twenty, and I must admit that they do sharpen up and work very well.

I was advised to buy gouges manufactured by Addis or Herring Brothers and to look for those stamped with the words 10 prize medals.  The history of the Addis family’s involvement in making edge tools is fascinating and can be found here.

If old tools are still in good condition they have probably been cherished by their previous owners, and there is something very satisfying about using a tool, which is over 100 years old; stamped with the initials of several previous owners, and ingrained with the sweat of many years of craftsmanship.  I have been able to buy these tools for about half the price of their modern equivalent and I would recommend that anyone  interested in the hobby should hunt around to buy some of these.

PS - Be aware that the auction sites are addictive !

By February 2019 I had bought so many of these gouges from e-bay that I had to create an addional shelf above my bench to accommodate them all.
